Did you know?

Showing up for school every day has a big impact on a student’s success. Families play an important role in making sure students understand why attendance matters—not just for school, but for future jobs too.

Key facts:

• Students should miss no more than 9 days a year to stay on track.
• Missing just 2 days a month (10%) can hurt learning and grades.
• By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs a student may drop out.
• By 9th grade, attendance is a stronger predictor of graduation than 8th grade test scores.
• Frequent absences may signal problems such as bullying, academic struggles or health issues.

What families can do:

• Talk about the importance of showing up every day.
• Build strong routines—homework, bedtime, healthy habits.
• Avoid scheduling non-urgent appointments during school hours.
• Stay engaged—check in on grades, social connections and class interest.
• Communicate with the school and seek help if absences add up.

We’ve included a handout with more tips for parents on supporting good attendance habits.
