The FAFSA is a single federal application used to determine student eligibility for multiple aid sources:

Starting with the 2026–27 school year, Pennsylvania school districts are required to ensure families receive information to either:

Complete the official FAFSA paperwork, or
Complete an official FAFSA Opt-Out Form

Note: Submitting an opt-out form will never prevent a student from graduating or affect their academic standing.

When students fill out their initial section or send invitations to parents/contributors, they must provide 4 exact identifiers matching official records:

First & Last Name: Must match legal name exactly.
Social Security Number (SSN): Or indicate if contributor does not have an SSN.
Date of Birth: In standard MM/DD/YYYY format.
Email Address: Personal email (must be different from student's email)

The FAFSA will be available October 1-June 30 for the upcoming award year. Students and parents will need a StudentAid.gov account to complete the FAFSA form.

🔒 SSA Verification: An identity match with the Social Security Administration (SSA) will automatically run as soon as an SSN is provided.

Who Needs an Account

Who Needs to Create a StudentAid.gov Account?

Under current FAFSA rules, anyone required to provide information, consent or an electronic signature on a student's application is known as a "Contributor." Every contributor must have their own separate account.

Required Roles

Primary Application Contributors

Account creation is based on family role and tax filing status:

The Student: Always required, regardless of dependency status.
Parents (Married, Filed Jointly): Only one parent needs an account to provide consent for both.
Parents (Married, Filed Separately): Both parents must create separate accounts.
Divorced/Separated Parents: Only the parent who provides the greater financial support creates an account. (If that parent is remarried and filed separately, the step-parent needs an account too).

⚠️ Never Share Accounts: An account acts as a legal signature. Students and parents cannot share an account or email address. Each user must use a unique email address.

Parents Without a Social Security Number:

Parents without an SSN are still eligible to create a StudentAid.gov account to complete their required contributor section online.

How to Invite Your Contributors

Students initiate parent participation directly inside their online application:

Email Needed: Students enter each contributor's legal name, date of birth, social security number and email address.
Verification Code: An automated email with a secure code is sent to the parent.
Accepting Invite: The parent logs in to StudentAid.gov and enters the code under the "Accept an Invite" section to unlock their part of the form.

✓ YES — Include Financial Info From:

Biological parents living together
Adoptive parents
Divorced or Separated parents: The parent who provided the most financial support over the past 12 months. (If support was equal, invite the parent with higher income and assets).
Step-parents (if currently married to the reporting parent)

✕ NO — Do NOT Include Info From:

Foster Parents
Court-ordered Legal Guardians
Grandparents, aunts, uncles or other relatives living with student
